OOTD: I wear short skirts!!

Last summer it was nothing but maxi dresses because I was so insecure about my legs. I have learned to love them so much now that I wear mini skirts whenever I feel like it. I walked around the grocery store in my tiny, backwoods home town, and when people stared (and oh how they did), I felt bad-ass instead of self-conscious. Hell yes, give me attention! I deserve it. :)

Plaid skirt: Donald Seneca (Amazon)—with Velcro closure so you can wear it higher or lower. Look at the size chart and take the measurements literally. This skirt is 3 sizes bigger than I wear in everything else. It is freaking fabulous in every way.
Tank: Hot Topic
Vest: Deb
Knee socks: Asos

This is difficult to do—it is difficult to remember that people with lives different and distant from your own even celebrate birthdays, let alone with gifts of graffitied plywood. You will always be stuck inside of your body, with your consciousness, seeing through the world through your own eyes, but the gift and challenge of your education is to see others as they see themselves, to grapple with this mean and crazy and beautiful world in all its baffling complexity. We haven’t left you with the easiest path, I know, but I have every confidence in you, and I wish you a very happy graduation, despite the circumstances.

“Indeed, the idea of ‘winning the girl’ – of overcoming female objections or resistance through repeated and frequently escalating efforts – is central to most of our modern romantic narratives. (Female persistence, by contrast, is viewed as pathetic.) And the more I think about instances of creepiness, harassment and stalking that culminate in either the threat or actuality of sexual assault, the more I’m convinced that a massive part of the problem is this socially sanctioned idea that men are fundamentally entitled to persist. Because if men are meant to persist, then women who say no must only be rejecting the attempt, not the man himself, so that every separate attempt becomes one of a potentially infinite number of keys which might just fit the lock of the woman’s approval. She’s not the one who’s allowed to say no, not really; she should be silent and passive as a locked door, waiting patiently while the man runs through however many keys he can be bothered trying. And if he gets sick of this lengthy process and just breaks in? Well, frustration under those circumstances is only natural. Either the door shouldn’t have been there to impede him, or it shouldn’t have been locked.”

As a feminist, shouldn’t I support women in all of their choices?

There are no neutral choices. In the leg shaving example, when I don’t shave my legs I’m an iconoclast, a rebel with a cause, an activist. It’s a political choice, and people will respond to that. But if I did shave my legs (and I did for years), then I’m contributing to the norms of hairless women. Or I’m reclaiming it as an act of self-care and self-love. No matter my choice, there is no way to opt out. In a world where women’s bodies are not their own (read patriarchy), all legs, hairy and smooth, are political. A feminism (I say “a feminism” because there are many feminisms) that’s invested in supporting women to make choices is incomplete and, to borrow from Flavia Dzodan, hegemonic. We have to acknowledge, understand, and begin to change the invisible structures that define our choices.
